Before creating Spring Drive, the choice was absolute. You either choose a mechanical watch and enjoy its traditional features and autonomy, but can tolerate its relative imprecision, or the accuracy of the electronic watch you wear has increased tenfold, but it requires a battery. In 1999, Spring Drive solved this problem by combining the best of the two existing watch technologies into a watch driven by a mainspring, which provides an accuracy of one second per day. Back then, and now, Spring Drive has been one of the biggest advancements in the watch industry.
Today, for two decades, Grand Seiko has introduced a new generation of Spring Drive movement, which is slimmer, more precise and has a greater power reserve. The 9RA5 movement took Spring Drive technology to a new level and opened a new era in the history of Grand Seiko.
Performance improvement in all aspects
The goal is ambitious. The Grand Seiko team’s goal is to make a Spring Drive watch that will set new standards for any spring-powered watch in terms of size, performance and functionality.
Their creation movement 9RA5 does exactly that. Compared with the mainstream 9R6 movement in the current series, the 9RA5 movement has a power reserve of 5 days, an increase of 60%. Its monthly accuracy has risen from ±15 seconds per month to ±10. The moving depth is reduced from 5.8mm to 5.0mm, and the date change speed is greatly improved.
The slim profile of the 9RA5 movement is achieved by redesigning and repositioning the magic handle. Magic Lever was internally developed in 1959. It uses the energy generated by the movement of the pendulum in two directions to improve the efficiency of the automatic winding mechanism. In the new movement, the position of the new offset magic lever is far from the center of the movement to reduce the thickness of the movement. The oscillator and sensor are vacuum sealed in a separate package to eliminate the slightest temperature difference between the two, and the shield also reduces the possible influence of humidity, static electricity or light interference, thereby keeping the accuracy of the watch at The highest level.
